Crash at Red Light

Ok I just have been talking to a friend of mine and he told me something I felt the need to post it here.

This happened sometime ago near where he live and it involves two cars [one with L plate and one without] and a set of traffic lights.

And this is how the drama unfolded. [no pictures i am afraid]…

  • So this L-driver was driving around the area – nothing out of ordinary
  • The Traffic light in front of L-Driver turned red – nothing out of ordinary
  • The L-driver slowed down for the red light – instead of speeding up like some people
  • Then; out of the blue; this driver with no L plate came out of the blue behind the L-driver full speed and *WHAM* right into the back of L-Driver’s car. (presumably at approx 40~50km/h; and my friend did not recall hearing screechy breaking sounds) ; to add on to the drama; the non-L driver got out of his car and started shouting abuses at the L-driver for stopping at a red light.

I laughed so hard I just had to share it here.

Note: No-one was injured [even the slightest] in this event and the two cars involved suffered only minor damage.

This is what hets my goat..now I know most Learner drivers are learners for a reason (that being they have had a 7 and a half year wait for their test haven't passed their test yet) but they constantly get slammed (literally by the sounds of this post) for having the L plates up and are seen as hazardous to our roads, when in fact most have the rules of the road off to a tee and are careful in their driving, as opposed to the ones who have had their full licences for a number of years, and apparently own the road and are the best drivers in the world in their own mind. Bad habits when driving and cockiness are, in my opinion, some of the main causes of road crashes, which we can see from the story above..which by the way is appalling.. I am not the best driver in the world and am on my second provisional, but have lost count of the amount of times I have been beeped at for being in the right lane of a roundabout by people in the wrong one thinking I took the wrong exit and nearly caused a crash..think again. When in doubt, blame the Learner eh?

I hope the debacle shake-up in rules puts some perspective on things, so that there will be a proportionate number of L drivers out there in the future, and people seeing an L plate will be more cautious, or give them the awareness they need. I think now, all too often, an L plate is a blame-magnet for the nonchalant, and people otherwise don't pay attention to an L driver. There's so many around it's almost a decorative bumper sticker and makes them all too familiar.

In my first few trips out as an L driver – on my own (yes I used the system though would have preferred someone with me, even though this was after 14 lessons) – when I was still hyper aware of everything around me and generally getting used to driving, I was HOPING people around me would give me the space cos I was a learner, kinda mentally projecting "lads the L plate, the L plate". But I was ignored mostly, with no rollback space behind me on an incline, or getting beeped for not moving off simultaneously at the red-to-green lights change.

Some perspective is needed in this regard, to get the driving population to notice L drivers and give them the time of day. Hopefully by that time, we won't have such a huge problem with backlogs or incompetent drivers who need to re-sit their test over and over and prolong their agony of driving on a permit.
