Don't worry!
The only law actually being enforced in Ireland is the smoking ban.
Dogs are banned on Lahinch beach during certain times, always loads of dogs there (if 1 dog craps on the beach it's a disaster, but shit from 10000 people being washed into the sea is OK, so another stupid, ignorant, nonsensical, oirish law)
Alcohol in public is forbidden, no one cares, fireworks are illegal, why are they everywhere then, litter all you want, no one will EVER do you, the so called "Blitz" against drink driving at Christmas never happens (cold out there and sooo cozy in the station), but my absolute favourite of all time:
Don't even THINK about going into the woods at Christmas time to steal a tree, the Geeaaards are hiding in the bushes guarding the trees.
AAAAAAAAHHHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As long as you have tax and insurance the cops couldn't care less if your car was on fire and you had a bomb strapped to yourself.

I think the new car laws are terible because I am a younger person without a chance to experiance the driveing life and I would like to have a chance to drive like everyone befor me did,I mean like why are they just randomly changing the laws for nothing?....makes no scence to me...I hope the don't follow through with this law.

My daughter is a learner driver and I accompany her whenever she's driving. The thing I am amazed at is the stupid, dangerous things other drivers do to get past an L driver! We've been overtaken on a roundabout, overtaken on the inside, people have driven out in front of her rather than let her pass first, (she always stays within the speed limit, but keeps her speeds with the general traffic who are also driving within the limit). Do these drivers not realise that they are likely to panic an L dirver by their stupid, stupid, behaviour?

Let me put out my opinion.

I was a L driver. I drove on my own. I didnt really care because I knew I would never be done for it. Why not? 6 years ago the government passed a motion saying you must carry your driving license at all times. I had been stopped in check points before that law and always said I had a full license because there was nothing they could do but ask me to present it which was a waste of both of our times.

That law may have changed but the important part remains the same.

If you drive unacompanied you have NO INSURANCE. Your insurance will cover the other car you hit but will not cover you, your passengers or your car. The reason for this is that you are in breach of the terms of your license agreement.

Also, if you a learner driver, your still learning even if your waiting for your test. You may think your a good driver and you might be but your not qualified which means you pose a problem for other road users.

If your own your fourth provisional license, either you may not bothered taking the tests or your just a shite driver. If your a shite driver then you should not be allowed on the roads anymore once your last license expires. You can by right apply for your test and renew your license without ever taking the test. This is the same for the NCT. You dont actually have to do the NCT just so long as you prove you are booked for one.

I know some good learner drivers but I have seen so many bad ones. Even today on the roundabout by Finnegans in Limerick this young girl driving on her own struggled to control her fiesta traversing the roundabout. I mean come on, she should never be on the road.

Before you start, I hate people saying, "how is she ever going to learn"? I would say "Not like that!" You cant learn by yourself because you pick up your own bad habits and you have no idea they are bad habits because nobody showed you the right way.

I totally agree with the new law. This has been allowed to go on for too long - (typical Irish) and now we have a chaotic situation. Unfortunately our government cant get it right becuse if you want to do a test - you gotta wait boyo, and they wont clear the back log any time soon.

I agree with the law but only if the test backlog issue is sorted out. I had to wait 36 weeks for my test. Now if they suddenly changed the law while I was waiting and off the road I was stuffed. If you could sit the test within two to three weeks of applying then it's ok. Otherwise it's unworkable. If they had implemented the restrictions on L-drivers all along fine, but when you have allowed/tolerated thousands of L-drivers illegally (or loophole legally) driving for decades you cant suddenly change the law. They should have driver theory at a minimum on the school curriculum for example. They should possibly try and get driving instruction at school level, perhaps as part of the transition year as well as raising safety issues at an early level.Oh yeah, I think that once they sort out the test backlog they should insist on the amnesty drivers from the 80s having to sit the test. How many shite drivers do we see with FULL licences who never sat their test because of our stupid government and their previous attempt to clear the L-driver situation by brushing it under the carpet? We'll never learn I guess!

On every school day, outside the small local 2nd level school there will be over 20 'L' plated cars parked by pupils, none of whom will have been accompanied by an experienced driver. At least halfof the drivers will be on their first provisional licence so are in breach of the current law.If Joe Public can see this , why can't the Gardai? Even easier targets than drivers doing 5km over the limit on dual carriageways and cerainly much more dangerous...let the spoilt brats WALK!!!
