you can say all, none or A for example. if you like to add any other type i dont mind either. i picked out the ones above because they stand out in a crowd. eg. it’s easier to remember these type of drivers than just your ordinary run of the mill joe soap .
DELIVERY DRIVERS ARE INCLUDED UNDER (D)

add in boy/girl racers with an exhaust pipe that wouldn’t be out of place on a Boeing 747… these really think that they own the road and that their driving ability surpasses everybody else.. also the GARDAI coz they think that because they are in a blue uniform they can practically do what they like…..

Of the four categories above one section stands out above the others, specifically because the standards required from those within that section is under a constant cycle of review, testing, retesting and retraining. Because the vehicle comes upon you as a monster that appears to be constantly trying to get its own way, its very presence appears intimidating and uncompromising. I am referring here to buses and the people who drive them.

The people I would acknowledge a greater level of respect and understanding, must be directed towards drivers of articulated vehicles, juggernauts and vehicles of such magnitude, who constantly have to drive arou
nd knowing that the vehicle they drive are machines of mass destruction, but still there are motorists in cars who at the best of times take on these machines or at worst make life difficult for those who try to guide these the vehicles through the city.
This does not go to say that some of the same drivers are all inspiring in their driving standards, but their job is made that little bit more difficult when a driver in a BMW decides his social status gives him the unquestionable right to drive in a manner he so pleases irrespective of the consequences to others.

Looking at bus drivers, very few people know, and at the best of times do not want to know the constant ongoing checking that is undertaken by bus drivers.

Firstly, the vast majority of Dublin Bus drivers have been trained and certified by the institute of Advanced motorists as advanced drivers.

Drivers are constantly checked for driving standards by uniformed inspectors and plan clothes driving standard inspectors.

Drivers are requested to attend a meeting in the divisional mangers offices where a driving inspection report is handed to them, and based on the severity of the report, are more often sent to the training school for corrective driving training.

Drivers can be suspended and even sacked for repeated breaches of driving standards.

Drivers loose certain financial benefits purely by having to attend the driving school.

    Drivers can be sent to the training school for what appears to be simple basic mistakes such as;
    1. allowing a passenger out before the bus stop(bus against footpath)
    2. not using the mirrors as required by the company
    3. allowing a colleague onto the bus that is not positioned at a bus stop.
    4. despite passengers complaining and at the best of times (mostly evenings) assaults, injuries and passengers causing damage to the bus itself, some drives find themselves opening the doors in order to avoid conflict. If you check the records you will find that some drivers left their job through medical or psychological reasons because of the injuries sustained while carrying out their job.
5 BOGEY Duties, These duties often mean a driver will report for work at 5.00am in the morning- break at 9.00am and will not be required to return to work until 2.00pm in the day to cover the remaining time of the duty. Most people work their shift from start to finish, with a one hour break, bus drivers do not have this luxury in order to refresh their minds for another day.
    6. Driving a bus or even an articulated vehicle on a road that at one moment in time is reasonably safe to proceed, is suddenly transformed to a road where obstacles, parked cars and vans, road works and cones litter the road and make the progress of the vehicle that much more dangerous, as learner drivers and the BMW brigade in full support of the taxi’s, try wheel spins and racing tactics in order to get around the bus.
Of all the people above the most regulated people in their driving standards are bus drivers. As seen when the Wellington Quay accident occurred, a significent number of drivers were accused and verbally abused by members of the general public and quite a lot of taxi drivers who would scream out MURDERERS when a bus driver applied the rules of the road and the taxi driver felt he or she was not getting their own way. We must also not forget that the driver concerned was acquitted of all charges relating to responsibility for the accident, but still drivers had to take this abuse long after the truth came out.

Oh yes there are bad bus drivers, just as there are bad workers in all other industries including those from higher professional background.

The vast majority of bus drivers do their jobs to the best of their ability, they have no choice as they are always under the sights of their superiors. The general public is the hardest section to work with, there again we are all part of the general public. Think about it, if you had to drive a bus in a city where taxi’s come out at you from everywhere, drunken adults dance in front of the buses as youths throw bricks, bottles and anything they can find at the bus as it passes by, would you continuing working as a driver. More often than not, passengers on the buses curse, swear, damage, assault and impede the driver in his or her desire to deliver decent and honest people to the place of their destination.

I could go on and on, but I think and hope I have got my message across. Who was it who said “Its a jungle out there” for that he was telling the truth.

Niall/Meanie – I can knock this up as a fancy graphical poll on it’s own page using PollDaddy if you’d like. All I need is the basic list, Meanie’s 4, plus any others. We can also leave a text box for ‘Other’.

Drop me a line if you think this is a runner.

    Securicor.
They have the god given right to park in the middle of the road while the whole town grinds to a halt for 15-20 minutes while they take their sweet fecking time to collect the money. And while I don’t mind telling people that “sorry mate, you’re holding up the entire town” I’m not in the habit of arguing with armed soldiers. Much more difficult to argue when you’re having an automatic pointed at you.
No joke, in Ennis there are several banks on very narrow street and while I concede that they have to park somewhere, in true Irish fashion the problem has simply been left to fester for the last 10 years. But now the town is mad busy and when they stop, everyone and everything has to stop too. Should anyone need an ambulance while they’re dawdling about I can only hope they have half an hour to wait for a defibrillator.

Where is the option to vote for Car drivers, looking at all the bad driving witnessed in one day, private car drivers would make up 80% of all incidents I see…

The only reason I haven’t answered this so far is because I feel sorry for all of the above, imagine being on the road every day for 7+ hours – no wonder they bully their way out because noone has the cop on to let them out. I’ve seen people speed up and over-take dangerously just because they see a bus about to pull out from a bus stop

this poll is ridiculous though, its down to the individual not what they’re driving

I say middle aged housewifes with short, severe hair, floral print dress, 3 screaming prats in the back, face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, with a husband that works as an accountant in a large insurance company, driving an MPV sized car that is actually based on a small compact and living in a semi-D in the suburbs. Wahey!

posh i agree with most of what you’ve said, except your last line

QOUTE “this poll is ridiculous though, its down to the individual not what they’re driving”
in this case it is down to what you drive. most of us hate being stuck behind a slow moving bus. we all love and hate buses.
they’re great when we use them but they’re awful when stuck behind one.
there are certain types of drivers that scare the shite of us on the roads and unfortunately as i said the ones i mentioned stand out in a crowd.

the exception of what you said above are bus drivers. it’s actaully down to what they do drive. as you said earlier

    Taxi drivers have to be!

I was in Newry tonight heading back to the M1 and had to stop because there was a car coming towards me and due to people parking on both sides of the road there was not enough room for two cars to meet.

So then a taxi driver pulls up behind me and beeps! Where i was i meant to go make the car fly!!
Then at the traffic lights he makes gesture of driving to me!

    MUPPET!

meanie all I’m saying is you can’t generalise and say EVERY bus/motorcycle/van/taxi driver drives slowly, acts dangerously and suffers extreme road rage

this topic is about the “worst offenders on our roads” if you want it to be about the above four only then it should’ve been called “the worst commercial vehicle drivers on our roads” and throw in an option E. for Scania’s

anyway why isn’t there an option for “all of the above” on this snazzy new poll you’ve done up? why don’t we start another poll called “who are the worst offenders on our roads men or women” because it’d make about as much sense as this one

Help us Obe-Wan Kenobi, help us to use the force, to deal with all the lunatics we encounter as we travel to the far reaches of our towns and cities and back again to our homes and safety. Each and everyone of us have the dark side hidden deep within us, we are all Shite drivers in our own way and should look deep within ourselves before we cast stones at others. We must use the force to overcome the dark side.

THE FORCE PEOPLE, USE THE FORCE.

Bad driving in this country comes from everywhere and certainly not one group of people.I have been nearly driven over by An Post van drivers three times in the last few months. Some white van drivers are also very agressive as are some Bus drivers. There is a plague of Boy racers in our country and its getting worse. And if all that was not bad enough we have the foreign drivers who still think they are at home on there 90 MPH Motorways.Really they know they are not but a lot show no respect and just dont care.Out of all our foreign friends the Poles are the worst in this category..Thats my opinion as a person who drives for a living on the matter anyway…

Hey sham rogue – The usual reason why cyclists are on the path is because of idiot drivers who drive about 4 inches from the kerb for no good reason at all. Usually when I encounter these idiots, I come round on the outside of the driver, tap on the drivers window (usually interrupting their phone call/text message/paperwork) and inquire if there is any particular reason why they are blocking the routes for cyclists. The more practically-minded cyclists around me will often hop up on the path for a few seconds to get past the idiot.

I presume that given your vociferous criticism of cyclists law-breaking, you have never broken a 50 kmph speed limit yourself -right? It would be just a tad hypocritical to criticise cyclists like this if you regularly break speed limits yourself, wouldn’t it?
