Firstly I’d like to congratulate you on the site!
About time someone came up with the idea.
I’m an Irish guy who’s been living for the past 12 years in France, I was recently home on holidays and I must say the Irish drivers did scare me a little
I think one of the roots of the problem of “bad drivers” in Ireland is greatly due to the fact that most started to drive with a provisional licence, thus learned bad habits, and kept them.
Here in France you cannot drive before the age of 18 and you must pass a full driving exam (theory and practical) to obtain your license.
Also, your first license has only 6 points for a period of three years, so as you can imagine, young drivers tend to drive safely in order to keep their license, they obtain the full 12 point licence after the trial period of three years has past.
I lost 2 points last year because I was 18km over the limit on a 4 lane motorway, and I can’t have them back before 2009! It certainly calmed me down! (Well for a while anyway
.
It’s just so easy to lose your points here, a few examples:
Phoning at the wheel = 1 point
No seat belt = 2 points
Drink driving, (over 0.50mg under 0.85mg) = 6 points
More than 0.85mg and you lose your licence (2 pints of lager )
And trust me when I say they don’t miss a chance to stop you.
(It’s said that the police receive a cash bonus each month if the quota for the area has been reached!)
