I regularly drive between Mayo and Cork so I’ve seen my share of poor driving. One incident that nearly saw a fatality happened last January on the N17 between Tuam and Claregalway. Two articulated trucks were at the head of a long queue of cars, mine being about halfway back. Some hero behind decided that he was going to overtake the lot, which was about 20 cars and the two trucks up front. He shot past on a reasonably straight stretch of road, but to overtake that amount of traffic in one go would need about a mile of clear road. He made it up to the back of the second lorry when another truck appeared over the brow of the hill approaching him. With a lot of frantic braking by both parties involved, he managed somehow to stop, reverse and get in behind the row of cars again, the truck, not able to stop as quickly, swerved violently to miss him and nearly crashed in the process, missing the offending car by inches.
As if this wasn’t enough of a warning, at the very next straight stretch the car driver did the same manoeuvre again, and this time succeeded in overtaking the lot. What a fool!!

Well there is an old saying that comes to mind. ” Drive like hell and you`ll get there”.
