Baby on Board

I am always intrigued at cars who display this in their rear windscreen.  I was driving on the main Mallow to Cork road behind a car displaying said sign.  The driver, female was weaving from one lane to the other on her mobile with a small baby in a car seat in the back.  I pulled up next to her at one point and shook my head in disbelief,  I got the finger!Clearly this individual had no regard for her child in the back seat.

Not many people know this but the original purpose of those ‘baby on board’ signs was so that in the event of an accident, the emergency services would check out that vehicle first. Maybe this woman knows this and also knows that with her driving she is going to have a crash sooner or later.

I didnt know the origins of the baby on board sign! It makes sense, and so does your comment!

I don’t care about the origins of the bloody baby on board thing. They just really do my head in. As if everyone who has one in their car knows the origins of them either! To me they say “don’t crash into me, I’m special, I have a baby”. Well, f*ck you! I don’t have a baby but don’t particularly want to die either. Why don’t I put a sign up in my car saying “I am in this car and don’t want to die so please think before you ram your vehicle into mine”. Honestly! Pathetic.

I interpret the sign as “I am probably distracted by said baby on board or tired by same so my driving is likely to be brutal; And I will probably park inconsiderately because I am special.”

    To Dee & daymobrew,

Your attitude towards people carrying children & displaying a ‘baby on board’ sign somewhat saddens me. As does your selfishness, as it’s not til you become a parent yourself that you realise that YOU are not actually the most important person in the world. As a father I would do whatever it takes to reduce the chances of my being involved in an accident with my daughter in the car, & if that means displaying a ‘baby on board’ sign (however pathetic you may think it looks), then so be it. I hope you never rear-end me , because if the crash doesn’t kill you, I f**kin might ! It’s because of a**holes like you that this site was created in the first place, how f**kin ironic that you should feel entitled to ‘contribute’ to it.

    Couple of things.
    1. I am a parent, I have an 11-month old. However, I dont see the point of a babyonboard sign. Whats it supposed to prove? Please dont crash into me cos you’ll hurt my baby? What about when the baby is 4 years of age, its ok to kill her then is it?! Its the epitome of stupidity. People who tailgate aren’t going to give a shite if you have a baby or a six pack of heineken on board!
    2. I cant remember what the second thing was!

God you’re a thin-skinned unstable lot. Are you all students or something?? Like Biker46 said, the thing is to alert the Emergency Services after a crash. They get stuck under seats and in the roof lining and stuff, so before the wreck goes up they ought to have a bit of a guddle about. Saves having to determine whether the crispy charcoaly lump the parents get back died as a result of the accident, or whether the rescuers could conceivably have been negligent. Sometimes they’re even alive.

A baby on board sign is Yellow with black writing….

As any decently informed driver will know a yellow sign will indicate that there is a hazard.

1- A driver with a baby is more likely to make a sudden swerve if a baby starts making a choking sound etc. in the back of the car….

Distractions are the second most likely killer on the road…

2- A driver with one of these signs will be less likely to break speed limits or do something stupid…

treat it as a responsible adult sign…

    Chips,

To respond to point 2: the driver I witnessed (see post) appeared to not give a second thought to the fact that her child was in the back seat. She weaved from lane to lane, was on the mobile phone AND speeding! Distractions can cause accidents I agree with you, but this woman had a ‘responsible adult sign’ in her car and was not behaving like a responsible adult herself. So I am supposed to accomodate her wreckless driving because of this sign??
